You Can Help “reforest” North Wayne and Fire-damaged Flathead National Forest! –thru the help of our very own NWPA and local Cub Scout Pack 284

What: As part of the Boy Scouts of America 100th Anniversary, the NWPA and local Cub Scouts from Wayne Elementary are taking orders for trees to help replant our tree-lined streets — where many of our trees have aged or fallen to disease. For just $20, you can buy a striking 2 – 4′-tall Centennial tree to nurture for generations to come! Select from the list of trees on the next page; the majority of the trees have been recommended by the Radnor Shade Commission. This is a great opportunity to plant living legacies in both Wayne and in our national forests, as well as enabling our local youth to perform a conservation project as part of their Scouting experience.

National Boy Scout Extra: As an incredible bonus, for every 100th Anniversary tree purchased, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant a corresponding tree in the newly created Boy Scouts of America Centennial Forest. The Centennial Forest will aid in re-planting the Flathead National Forest in Montana after recent fires, where deforested areas threaten tree seed-sources, wildlife shelter and grizzly bear habitat.

Local NWPA Extra: There are also a limited amount of “gift trees” that have been purchased by donators and Cub Scout Pack 284 – if you cannot afford a tree but would still like to plant one in front of your house, just let us know and we will supply on a first come, first serve basis (limit 1 per home). If you would like to gift a tree to a neighbor or donate to the NWPA gift tree program, just place another order and indicate how you would like to see it used.

When & How: Local Scouts will be visiting homes in the next couple of weeks taking orders. You may also simply send your order to Charlie.herrin@me.com. Tree orders are due by 4/28 and will ship in mid-May. Scouts and NWPA volunteers will be contacting you as soon as the trees arrive to schedule your planting during the weeks of May and early June (there will be 2-3 weekend time slots available). If you would prefer to just have the tree delivered, please let us know when you place your order.

Volunteer: If you are interested in working alongside the Cub Scouts, please contact Charlie Herrin at Charlie.herrin@me.com. It is a 1-2 hour commitment on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in May/early June.

See attached PDF for order form and info: You Can Help Project – PDF

Dear Neighbor,

After a Winter filled with snowstorms, snowmen, snow shoveling and snow days, I am sure many of you would be happy not to see the word snow let alone that white fluffy substance for quite awhile. I personally love the white fluffy stuff but am also looking forward to Spring after experiencing some warm, sunny weather this past week. Speaking of white fluffy stuff, our activities ladies were put to the test by our first big snow storm coming just days before the Carol Sing, still many braved the cold and snow drifts to carol at Finley House. A big thanks to all those who helped to decorate the Finley house, bake cookies, bring donations for ABC house and sing that evening.

Our Progressive Dinner committee has been busy planning and tasting for the upcoming Progressive Dinner in April. The dinner is being held a bit later than usual this year, due to a late spring break, but we hope that the delay will result in beautiful weather. I do not think we will need to worry about snow for this event! You should have received your invitations for the Progressive Dinner in the mail. If you have never attended this event, it is the most popular event in our neighborhood and I encourage you to participate. If you love the event and would like to get more involved, please consider joining the Progressive Dinner Committee next year. It is a great way to meet new people and obtain many tasty recipes as well. Another upcoming neighborhood event is the popular Easter Egg Hunt for our younger residents (ages 10 and younger). Further details for both the Easter Egg Hunt and Progressive Dinner are within this newsletter.

There are other changes in the neighborhood of a development/zoning nature about which you should be aware. This involves the purchase of 19.4 acres of land by Eastern University from VFMA. The land which is under agreement is called the South Campus. This parcel is located at Radnor Street Road and Walnut Lane stretching over to Eagle Road. Eastern University has stated that their present plans for the property are to retain the existing housing for faculty and to construct a performing arts center in the location where Sullivan Hall used to stand. Naturally, many neighbors are interested in better understanding the plans of Eastern University. Some of your neighbors have been actively working to keep abreast of the situation. If you are interested in knowing more and would like to know what they have learned, please contact me and I will direct you to the appropriate party. I can be reached via email at p.ball2@verizon.net or by phone at 610-225-0233.

Lastly, we continue to try to improve our communication with the membership. Our newsletter is being sent this month as a PDF instead of an attachment. That means that when you open the email, the newsletter should be right in front of you. Kat Springer and the rest of the NWPA board have been working hard to make communication easier, greener and more cost effective. If you have any comments or ideas please contact Kat or me.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring and look forward to seeing many of you at the Progressive Dinner.

Sincerely,

Paula Ball
NWPA President

Local Cub Scouts from Pack 284, Wayne will be out in the neighborhood in March and early April as part of a conservation service project to replace trees on our North Wayne streets. This is the 100th anniversary year of Scouting and the Boy Scouts of America have teamed up with the National Arbor Day Foundation on a program to reforest local areas. From their first days in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has built character and values-based leadership qualities in America’s youth, and provided a platform for strengthening families. And, as a core tenet of Scouting, Boy Scouts have practiced responsible environmental living and conservation of natural resources throughout their existence.

Our local Pack 284 Cub Scouts will be taking donations to plant 2-4 foot “Centennial” trees in front of houses in the North Wayne neighborhoods. For each newly donated and planted tree, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant another tree in the Flathead National Forest where recent wildfires have destroyed native seed sources. As those trees grow, they will shelter hundreds of wildlife species, prevent soil erosion and runoff, and generate oxygen for our environment. In a joint community work effort, local NWPA volunteers and the Cub Scouts will plant the trees near Arbor Day (last weekend in April).

Each donation will not only restore and leave a tree-lined legacy in North Wayne, but will serve as a great learning experience for our young local boys on the importance of community and civic programs. To keep costs down, there will be some amount of “seed money” from benefactors and volunteers. Check out the NWPA website in the coming weeks for more detailed information.

For more information about the program, feel free to contact Charlie Herrin, charlie.herrin@me.com.

On a white winter eve, many a neighbor met at the Radnor Historic Society to share good cheer.
The snow covered grounds made for such a magical scene.
The hot chocolate and cookies were tasty and a plenty.
Spirits were high.
And then so became the tension as Santa’s truck was late. Oh my!!
An emergency call in town.
Thankfully Radnor Fire Co has its priorities right and took care of the emergency first.
There are so many people who contributed to the lovely evening and also created a festive environment in North Wayne. Thank you to…..

· To all those who decorated the Radnor Historic Society and Triangle Tree
· Paula Ball and Dima Skvortsova for shoveling snow from the porch and setting the luminaries
· Santa Claus and the Radnor Fire Company for reminding us of simple pleasures
· Geoff Chamberlain, Doug McCone and Louisa Shepard for leading us robustly in song
· Ted Pollard, Mike Lihota, and Kaveh Taghavi for clean up
· The many baking elves who supplied cookies
· All those who brought donations for the Radnor ABC House

VERY IMPORTANTLY, thank you ALL for coming. It is only with participation that our neighborhood is the special place it is.

Yours in Fun,
The Activities Committee
