WHAT IS THE NWPA?
The North Wayne Protective Association (NWPA) is a civic organization that has been in existence since 1885. It is the oldest continually existing civic association in the nation. Through the years its responsibilities have evolved. Originally it was organized to address issues such as malarial influences, swamp drainage, porch foundations, macadamizing North Wayne Avenue, street lighting, and fire protection.
In the first month of its existence the NPWA established a Fourth of July celebration and an annual dinner, a combined social gathering and business meeting, both of which continue today. Other activities developed over the years, reflecting the changing times and interests of the community. While the annual square dance and May basket contest no longer exist, the hayride, luminaries, carol sing, progressive dinner, Easter egg hunt, yard sale, and soap box derby provide neighbors a broad range of activities.
We produce about five newsletters a year and a directory of members every other year (with an update sheet for the interim year). As a member you will receive those publications, free luminaries to place on your property the night of the carol sing (the Sunday before Christmas), and an invitation to participate in all of our activities of which most are free. Occasional emails will be sent out to inform you of any updates on activities or about issues concerning our neighborhood.
The progressive dinner is a lot of fun and a great way to meet other neighbors. The fun and tasty committee sets the menu for a night in which you go to one of three houses for appetizers, then to a different house for dinner, and then all gather at one home for desserts. Please read the descriptions of all our activities to decide if you would like to be on any of the committees or which ones you plan to attend.
We are hoping you will join the NWPA and we will look forward to meeting you at our various events.
WHEN DOES THE NWPA MEET?
NWPA Board meetings are held September through May on the first Wednesday of each month, 7:30 pm at the Gryphon Cafe on Lancaster Avenue in downtown Wayne. Meetings are open to any who would like to attend.
